The actor was the last surviving cast member of the long-running series.
Roberts initially found fame alongside Lorne Greene, Michael Landon and Dan Blocker as the oldest of Bonanza's three Nevada rancher siblings.
Greene, who played patriarch Ben Cartwright, passed away in 1987.
Wow, another childhood memory leaves us...
Do you remember him on Bananza?
I always thought he was the best, most rugged looking brother.
I mean, who didn't love Hoss?
And Little Joe was... well, just Little Joe...
But the oldest brother Adam was so....well, grown-up..or something. Besides, his name was fun to say....PERNELL...still is.
He always seemed to know the best way to 'fix' things without loosing his temper, like Hoss or Little Joe. Or even their Dad!
Ok, I was still a kid but I could have a crush ya know...
And while I was walking back down that lane again and remembering Bonanza, I started thinking of all the fun Western TV that we just don't have anymore. Now days it's all the Cop shows or the 'Reality' ummm... stuff. I really miss the times when we could forget everything else for awhile and watch how the West was won. All the Good Guys and of course the Bad Guys. White hats, black hats, guns in holsters wrapped around their hip. Horses and ropes. Ya, I can already smell the leather and dust...
So now we have to go back and see what ones I remember.
How about 'The Rifleman'.. Now there's another crush this little gal had! Just watching him swing that shotgun up and shoot the bad guys away. He was my hero many times. And Johnny was cute too...
Remember him? Palidin, Palidin , where do you roam....
'Have Gun Will Travel'
And another of my favorites..

'Wagon Train'
How cool to get all the wagons in a circle like that. Ward Bond as the wagon master was the kind of guy I thought would be a fun Grampa...

Remember 'The High Chaparell' Way out in the desert with a HUGE ranch house and his pretty little wife holding everything together while the guys went to get cattle rustlers.

AHH, yes, talk about good looking... Do you remember 'Laramie'?
Another hunk to save the day...
Remember Steve McQueen.. always the tough guy in 'Wanted Dead or Alive'
Oh, and everyone knew the 'Lone Ranger' and Tonto.

The word I remember most is 'Kimosabe'. Wonder what that meant...
And the silver bullets... and the very smart horse...Triger, right? He always came to get the 'Masked Man' no matter what cliff or building he was jumping from. I actually remember my neighbor friends Grama listening to this on her old brown radio.
Then there's this one...
Good ol 'Rowdy' in 'Rawhide'. Course he got off his horse and became a Mayor one day, but before that we just knew him as the cute cowboy...
Ok, saved the 'Best' for last...my opinion anyway....
'Gun Smoke' in all it's glory, Good 'ol Doc, Festus, Matt and Miss Kitty. I believe this was the longest running TV Western of all time. And I bet I saw all the episodes at least twice! This picture is an early one with Festus, remember him? Later came 'Chester'. And I remember the same neighbor Grama listening to this on the radio too.
Oh, the good 'ol Days for sure. I miss watching these shows. Ya, in today's standards, they would be considered violent... oh pleeeese! At least someone always saved the day...
Tell me some others you remember and what your favorites were.
And again , thanks for walking with me.
Rest in Peace Pernell.....

I love this post! My family watched all of these when I was growing up.
I remember wanting to marry Hoss when I was a little bit of a thing. Go figure!
Rest in peace, Pernell.
I remember them all. I also had a crush on Adam when I was a little girl
I was so sad when I heard this news. It was the end of an era.
Mary
I was sad to hear the news about Pernell Roberts.
I thought of some other Westerns we used to watch (some on re-runs):
Fury was my favorite. It was about a horse named Fury.
Here Come the Brides. I was just a little thing when that one came on, but I was in love with Bobby Sherman. I guess I didn't notice David Soul until later shows he was in.
Grizzly Adams, Little House on the Prairie, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Kung Fu, F Troop, Guns of Will Sonnett with Walter Brennan (I used to watch that in re-runs).
I do miss good TV programming nowadays. In fact, when all the stations went digital, we couldn't get a good signal at our house, converter box or not, so we just don't have broadcast TV anymore. We still have the TV and a VCR and DVD player, but just watch old videos mostly (The Waltons, Andy Griffith, I Love Lucy, etc.). I haven't missed much but PBS on TV!
I remember all of them! But, oh....how I loved BONANZA!
Cheers,
Jo
Oh gosh, I remember all these shows. My dad was (and still is) a huge fan of westerns - give him a Zane Grey novel and he's happy (even though he has probably read it 6 times). I never thought of it, but you are right - where did all the Westerns go? I wonder if a lot of the storylines would now be considered politically incorrect? Probably since so much nowadays is. They were so entertaining it is a shame that this genre has died out.
R.I.P. Pernell Roberts. He was my fave on Bonanza.
I remember all of them! I had a super crush on Johnny- the Rifleman's son - and the oldest Cartwright? He was sexy before I ever knew what sexy was!!
the Rifleman was one of my little girl crushes! how about Cheyenne with Clint Walker?
I loved Bonanza!!! My husband and I were just trying to remember all there names and what year they died. Well hell all I have to do is go here? You know all the good ole stuff. I liked the rifleman best he was so cool and always took out the bad guys. And we loved Mark the little cutie. But at my young age I had a crush on the father! How cute! I really liked Ms. Kitty she was tough and cool and I had no idea what her employment was? I asked my Dad one time "How come all the ladies hate Ms. Kitty?" He just laughed and said "There just jeoulous of her because she's so pretty" I thought thats just dumb. Thanks kid for the walk down memory lane.
wow! What a great post down memory lane of the good ole shows we use to watch. Gosh you even have Clint on here.
Strange I just thouht of Pernell the other day wondering if he were still living. Now I know the facts. Sad their all gone from Bonanza. Do you know why he left the show to begin with.
Enjoyed this post

Since Maggie asked, I did a little research and found this:
"Although he rocketed to fame in 1959 as Adam Cartwright, eldest son of a Nevada ranching family led by Lorne Greene's patriarchal Ben Cartwright, Roberts chafed at the limitations he felt his "Bonanza" character was given.
"They told me the four characters (Greene, himself and Dan Blocker and Michael Landon as his brothers) would be carefully defined and the scripts carefully prepared," he complained to The Associated Press in 1964. "None of it ever happened."
It particularly distressed him that his character, a man in his 30s, had to continually defer to the wishes of his widowed father.
"Doesn't it seem a bit silly for three adult males to get Father's permission for everything they do?" he once asked a reporter.
Roberts agreed to fulfill his six-year contract but refused to extend it, and when he left the series in 1965, his character was eliminated with the explanation that he had simply moved away. "

If you remember, he did another TV series...."Trapper John" created after the hit show "MASH". I remember seeing it but I don't think it lasted that long.
Thanks everyone for visiting!
