LOVEABLE QUIRKY PEEPS

2/7/11

BOSTON...Day 4

THURSDAY...

The dilemma of my non working camera started the day.
So, pictures on here will have been taken from online sites.
THIS ONE has some great information...

We took a break from seeing history on foot. We actually got in the car and drove to Lowell Massachusetts.

To see the AMERICAN TEXTILE MUSEUM...

What an awesome place! Everything from hand carding wool

to spinning wheels

 to a space glove display.

Stories of the animals; sheep, cows, horses, etc., the plants; cotton, linen and of course the worm's silk:) The actual tools used and the finished products are there. Exhibits ranging from clothes and simple decorative articles of the past to astronaut suits, protective clothing for firefighters and soldiers, and “shark skin” suits for Olympic swimmers.

A Linen dress c. 1909, notice the detailed hand stitching....

A Printed Cotton dress, c. 1845

And a Printed Silk dress c. 1925, created by layering the colors.

Of course I loved the apron display of the 1940 and 50's...

There was a beautiful ladies blouse on display, long sleeved and elegant. It had been created in the early 1900's by a seamstress for her teenage daughter using....a parachute!  (couldn't find a picture of it..) And I learned Lowell was the first city in the country to hire women to work in the factories...making parachutes!

Then downstairs are all the machinery exhibits, the ones used in factory's.  They still work and it's pretty interesting to watch.

We even had lunch there:)

A yummy bowl of chowder and a sandwich....

If you ever get the chance to go, you won't be disappointed. I'm just sorry I didn't get my own pictures to share....
Then on to New Hampshire to see the Atlantic. We actually drove along the coastline and stopped at a few places just to walk along the quaint New England sidewalks. Saw a lighthouse too and was so amazed. (remember, I'm from the western desert)

Then back to Boston and a Greek Restaurant for dinner...
another first for me.  I've eaten lamb before, but I learned the Greeks cook it different than the Sheepherder's of the West :)

It was delicious!

Then it was back to the apartment to get a good nights sleep.

Friday would be a BIG day!

I'll be back to tell more soon...

See ya Yesterday, One Tomorrow at a Time...

Lowell, now there's a coincidence. In 1969 my (then) husband and I went to live in Mass, and this included 3 years in Lowell. We returned to the UK after five years, but your pics brought back many fond memories. Thank you. Blessings

WoW! And I'm disappointed for you that your camera bit the dust. I will also have to remember to go to the textile museum in Lowell. When I'm visiting my friends in CT, we often look for things to do, and I am very interested in textiles!
Thank you for your wonderful description of your days in Boston!

There's nothing like New England clam chowder in New England, except for Boston baked beans in Boston. With brown bread.
