LOVEABLE QUIRKY PEEPS

BETTER KNOWN AS....

Tucked the grands in bed a bit ago and thought I'd go ahead and post the nickname list... If you've read the last Canute and Sarah post, you know about all the Scandinavians and how confusing it was to know who someone wanted to talk to, or was talking about.  So another means of identification was needed. That's where the nicknames came in.....

Some of them came to be better known by their nicknames than by their real names. Some, who's sense of humor was a a little pinched, took offense at the nickname given them. But in most cases they realized this was a good solution to the problem and took it for what it was worth.

Sometimes the names were given in reference to how the people went about their daily lives. Some were given for the work they did. Some for another identifying trait. You'll see as you read the list. Some of the names stuck even into the following generations....

Here are the ones Aunt Edith included in the book:

Absolutely Anderson, Tom Tinker, Joe Potmaker, Mass Weaver, Mass Thorpe, Blind Mass, Jake Stein, Mass Clerk, Jim Washer, Joe Dobemaker, Fred Jorg, Black Anderew, faun Galm, Little Witch, Joe Boots, Chris Lingo, Uska Lars, Johnny Buttermilk, Pete Bishop, John Bolly, John Shiner, Spool Jim, Handy Cransen, Yense Fiddler, Soren Rat, Lype Parley, Bear Hans, Chris Torum, Pete Buck, Mort Hune, Charley Blacksmith, Little Larsen, Long Soren, Chinaman, Big Mart, Jim Magistrate, Bert Fiddlesticks, Cap Whitlock, John Harden, Johnny's Michael, Painter Hansen, Yonder Goon, Gold Woman, Dave Paddy, Rich Hans, Kale Joe, Creamery Rasmusson, Faithful Andrew, Press Man, Chris Squirt, Doc Lindberg, Soldier Hans, Andrew Millburger, Teddy Balser, Salt Hans, Bee Hunter, Tesa Peg, Willie Nisson, Little Chris, Chris Butcher, Pete Butcher, Chris Goldigger, Soren Piladas, Shimmy Soren, Long Peter, Salt Peter, Tule Soren, Little Hans, Gopher Lars, Lars Peter, Merrill Stinkbug, Soren Chickenheart, Alice Sheepelt, Ors Hague, Eldon Tunny, Niels Kels, Pete Streep, Willie Bishop, Lars Peter, Ole Miller, Chris Cellar, Little Pete, Frank Antone, Dibbie Dee, Yasper Foot, Pete Friday, Fat Lars, German Rasmusson, Crazy Poulson, Chris Whitehead, Grinnin Billy, Boot Hansen, Charlie Well-driver, Chris Barned, Dirty Mart, Cross-eyed Mart, Pete Icecream, Swede Dressmaker, Annie On The Hill, Peep Hole Soren, Flying Carpenter, Chris Taller, Pete Pigkiller, Deaf Dressmaker, Alphabet Hansen, black Jim, Little Swedish Tailor, Andrew Carnegie, Doc Quinn, John August, Sister Gulling, Little Nels, Lewis Shooter, Smily Pete, Parley Polka Dancer, Tail Burner, Egg Woman, Ole Kesko, Chris Ole, Ile Kay, Otto Gee, Big Mary Ann, Little Mary Ann, Norman Beemas, Oliv Coofee-pot and Indian Mary....

I'll have a story about Indian Mary in the next post. I thought I would have the story all told this weekend....won't happen. But I'll still be drawing for the 2 GIVEAWAYS, so go enter.

I have another book with nicknames in it and some of them are hilarious. I'll have to look for it another day. I can tell you that here where I live, two brothers married girls named Susan. But everyone knows them by Susan Phil or Susan Brian...meaning which one of the brothers they "belong" to (o:

Hope you get a little chuckle and I'll be back sometime soon with more..
And you still have all day to do this...
"THIRD GIVEAWAY POST.."
See ya Yesterday...

Jake Stein - a drunk?

Handy Cransen - I just like the sound of this one.

Deaf Dressmaker??? Pfffttt!!

When some people came through Ellis Island, their names were changed to reflect nicknames. The people on the other side of the counter couldn't always understand the accents or spell names correctly and would become impatient.

The 'Pete Bishop' was Sarah's Peter and they called his son 'Peetie Bishop' This comes from Canute's position..
On the other side of 'me', my other G-Grandparents came through Ellis and had their name changed also. That's another story...
